In many garages, there's not much space left for storage after the cars are inside. Luckily, there are ways to make the most out of the space you have.
1. Hanging Rack
Take advantage of the space between the top of your car and the roof of the garage. Using angle brackets and some short sections of 2×4 lumber, you can build a rack up there that is ideal for holding long, narrow items such as fishing poles, spare tubing, piping, or light lumber and moldings.
2. Off the Wall
Wall-mounted shelves will store lots of items, such as clay pots and gardening gloves; if the area between the car and wall is tight, install the lowest shelf a minimum of 72 inches high to allow enough clearance for people to walk underneath. Hooks, pegs and wall straps are handy storage items as well. Specialty hooks hold items such as rakes, shovels, bikes, hoses, and ladders. Attach these to wall studs in your garage if you plan to hang anything that weighs more than about 20 pounds. Try magnetic strips for holding screwdrivers and other tools.
3. Slot Walls
Although attached to wall studs, slot walls enable you to use the entire wall surface for storage. Made of 3/4-inch-thick composition board, slot walls feature T-shaped horizontal grooves that support hooks, shelves, and baskets anywhere on the wall. Slot wall systems usually come in 4-by-8-foot sheets that you can have custom cut. The sheets come in various colors and finishes.
4. Perforated Hardboard
Perforated hardboard is 1/4- or 1/8-inch-thick composition board with holes spaced 1 inch apart over the entire surface. It is nailed or screwed directly to wall studs or attached to furring strip spacers over a finished wall. Special hooks fit into the holes to hold items. Because the holes are only 1 inch apart, perforated hardboard allows closer spacing of stored items than do slot walls. It's also less expensive. Perforated hardboard is thinner, however, than slot wall material, so it can warp in damp environments or when heavier items are attached to it.
